Augustine's "On Lying" was written by St. Augustine who was born in 354AD and died in 430AD. Augustine was originally a Manichean, who explained why good people got hurt on this earth with a principle of the dual nature of good and evil. The human spirit was good (light) and matter was evil (dark). Matter had but a limited life, and the world's history showed that chaos was always the clash of matter's false world with that which is good. Chaos, and the pain of good people was simple the result of collisions between good and evil. Once Augustine became a Catholic he was a monotheist and no longer believed in this duality. The one God was the creator of good and men, as a reesult of original sin -- a choice made with their free will, were the creators of bad. Augustine's conversion to this thinking came about because he got a prestigious position in Milan, where he went to hear the Bishop Ambrose. AT the age of 33, Augustine chose to take a vow of chastity (which he knew he would not be able to keep if it were not for choosing to live within the Christian community) and a vow of poverty. He evetually became the Bishop of Hippo where he did most of his writing. Another person, Pelagius, had held that salvation lay in doing good works. Agustine went beyond this. He argued that knowledge was virtue, like Plato and Confucius before him. He argued, like Nietzsche -- who followed him, the concept of "libido domandi," that man was ruled by his passions. But for Augustine things like pride and desire wewre bad. Nietzsche saw these as good. Augustine felt that to avoid the bad required divine intervention, grace that would elevate the sinner to a purified life. SOme would say the thought all lies were bad. Actually, he felt that speaking that which is not true could be bad, or good, depending on whether or not the untruth was spoken for the intention of deception. Many ROman writers of his day blamed Catolicism for Rome's decline. Meakness and humility were replacing the concepts of courage and daring. Augustine responded that it was the decadence and immorality of Roman leaders that caused the decline. He added that no earthly city, like Rome, could last forever, as would the City of God. He predicted that the Catholic Civilization of God would outlive the Roman empire.
