In the United States, political issues, International politics, USA politics, federal and state politics and the redistribution of weakth are usually driven by what is in the best interest of Democratic and Republican politicians. But, Political Science, as taught in Universities, often ignores the fact that politicians always act to meet their own personal goals. Of course, this alone is not a surprise. Most people act based on what is best for themselves. What makes politicians different is that, unlike average citizens, the Democrat and Republican politicians can make laws which prevent them from being accountable for doing what would normally be illegal and they get to investigate themselves when government makes mistakes. (see, as an example, Politics and the Katrina and Rita Hurricane Commission) which explains why politicians of the two major parties cannot be trusted with tens of billions of dollars to fix Hurricane Rita and Hurricane Katrina problems, or to investigate what went wrong in government before, during and after these Hurricanes.

It might be in your best interest to take a bribe from someone to not do what you should do for your employer. But, this would be illegal, for you. Politicians, on the other hand, routinely accept money (called "political contributions" rather than "bribes") from special interest groups to do what's best for the group, rather than the American people. (See, for example, Dicks Guide to Politicians and how politicians encourage the NEA teacher's union to prevent good education and Teachers Unions' PAC's Gave $5.2 Million to politicians in the '89-'90 Elections) Thus, while the USA Constitution states that the people are to be sovereign, the politicians are more often driven by the special interest groups who pay them, and the sovereign control of the USA and -- to a lesser extent -- the rest of the World, lays in the hands of special interest groups and elected officials, at both the federal, state and local level, serving their own special interest.

Very often politicians and special interest groups have a synergistic relationship (see, for example ELECTED POLITICIANS TAKE MONEY. Politicians need money to remain politicians, and Special Interest groups have money to buy action from the politicians.

Only if a politician no longer needs to be re-elected as, for example a second term President, can a politician become more independent of interest groups and pursue alternative personal interests, like building a reputation, saving a reputation (see President William Clinton's character and future) or getting a good high pay job after politics as, for example, a lobbyist.

Politicians taking money from special interest groups and then introducing legislation to help these special interests, are usually on a slippery slope leading to outright corruption. The politicians in the USA have had a history of corrupt behavior (see Political scandals in America) and will say and do almost anything to get elected. (See, for example, Clinton had to lie. The corruption in both political parties in the USA, Democrat and Republican, had reached such a level that by 2005 it was clear that America's two-party system of democrat and republican politicians would end by 2012.
