Dick's Guide to the Demise of Universities and Colleges for Undergraduate Degrees. Also see Educational Establishments Damage Students Universities and colleges, as we have known them, will cease to exist within 25 years. There is little reason for anyone to travel to school, spend time in libraries, go to classes with fixed schedules and pay tens of thousands of dollars, to accumulate knowledge that is already free on the internet. Many educational institutions have already instituted online courses. But, the colleges are charging for these courses, and that simply won't work. Knowledge is too available and its free, so universities will need to develop a new paradigm to survive. They won't. Colleges and universities are vitally dependent upon a centuries old system, where the knowledge seeker is a second class citizen. paying for the opportunity to attain knowledge. This will end. Free courses, supported by advertising revenues, and public minded citizens, will be better, easier and cheaper to take. From the standpoint of the student, the only thing holding back an immediate revolution is the still existent need for a diploma. It will take employers some time before they will become comfortable with a graduate from OFU, the Online Free University. Universities and professional unions, like the NEA and ABA, will also fight to demand actual diplomas from schools accredited by the unions, and it will take time for legislative bodies to end the professional union's hold over educational formalities.
