The Fifteenth Amendment

The Fifteenth Amendment

Johnson (Andrew, not Lyndon) was acquitted on May 16, 1868. The Republicans nominated Ulysses S. Grant for the presidency. Johnson did not even win the Democratic Convention, which chose Horatio Seymour. Grant won the election of 1866, but an analysis of the results shows that most white Americans disapproved of the radical Republican's views, to expand suffrage to northern blacks. However, a practical review of the voting results of 1864 demonstrated to Republicans that there was advantage to enfranchising all of America's black voters. Suddenly, there was a Fifteenth Amendment that was sent to the states for ratification in February 1869. Now, some northern states held back (CT, NY, PA), but by March 1870 the amendment was ratified. It would be subverted in the South, especially by Democratic politicians, with literary tests and other restrictions.
